Climate change is a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels. It is basically a long-term change in the weather pattern of the Earth. Earth’s temperature keeps changing on a yearly basis but it does not change as much as it has in a decade or so. There are many reasons as to why climate change occurs naturally. It might be due to the change in the solar radiations the Earth is receiving or a volcanic eruption. But the sudden, erratic and rapid climate change is due to an indifferent human behaviour.

It is important to understand the difference between climate and weather to understand the implications of climate change. Earth has steady atmospheric and oceanic conditions like the air temperature, wind speed, rain fall distribution etc. These conditions keep varying due to many factors and this variation is known as weather. And the average of this variation is known as climate.

According to the United States Environment Protection Agency (EPA), “The evidence is clear. Rising global temperatures have been accompanied by changes in weather and climate. Many places have seen changes in rainfall, resulting in more floods, droughts, or intense rain, as well as more frequent and severe heat waves. The planet’s oceans and glaciers have also experienced some big changes – oceans are warming and becoming more acidic, ice caps are melting, and sea levels are rising. This is extremely important because as these and other changes become more pronounced in the coming decades, they will likely present challenges to our society and our environment.”

The current warming trend is of particular significance because most of it is human-induced and proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented in the past 1,300 years, according to NASA.

The problem isn’t that this is happening but the fact that it is happening at this alarming speed. Today’s levels of CO2 levels are as high as 410ppm. This has not been seen for at least 800,000 years. CO2 levels have been increasing since the mid 1800(s), with a rapid speed in the last 20 years.

A warming climate poses a huge risk for the natural world and also for human well being as well. Scientists are predicting many more Hurricanes like the Hurricane Harvery and Cyclones like Cyclone Fani and many more floods like the one’s happening all over the world.

All countries need to join hands internationally to combat Climate Change. And every inhabitant of the planet needs to do something other than just sharing videos about climate change. The planet is ours, if the planet dies, we will also die along with it.
