Intensive background music, covering every character's reaction atleast thrice, killing the major characters and then bringing them back to life with a new face and sometimes even an accident would change the character's face. The Indian Soap Operas have for long quizzled us with it's peculiarity. Be it a mythological show, or a melodramatic one or a show purely based on supernatural elements, the Indian TV serials have always managed to gather TRP. The audience of these shows mainly consists of middle aged women who often glue to their television sets after finishing their household work.

A hundred channel running a thousand shows under different names but with the same old storyline. Indian soap operas are either about an ideal bahu's struggle to survive at her in-laws house or about her journey of going against all odds to unite her family. One of the interesting things about these soap operas is that most of them are women-centric, hardly you'll come across a show that has a male protagonist in it. But it would be a mistake here to think of this women centrism as women empowerment. Infact these Tv serials have stereotyped women by portraying them as either purely good or as completely bad characters ( vamps). Female leads in the top-rated shows are mostly seen crying or suffering at hands of others. Although the television industry cliams to have given shows with a fresh content, it has failed to break the monotoneity of the soap operas.

For deacades shows like kyuki saas bhi kabhi bahu thi, kahani Ghar Ghar ki, kasauti Zindagi ki have ruled the audience's heart. The actors who played the characters gained huge popularity from the show and became a household name. The wide popularity that these shows enjoyed in their time only shows that Indian TV industry have always been obsessed with the saas- bahu drama.

Some recent shows like Nagin, Dayan , topping the TRP chart shows the audience is not yet ready to embrace shows with quality content.

Apart from the daily soaps, there are many reality shows on TV , but most of them are alleged to be scripted. The trend only indicates that the organizers of these shows know what exactly the audience wants, that is a story with a hero and a villian.
