Jangsem Sherap Zangpo founded Phuktal Monastery during the 14th century. It belongs to the Gelug School of Buddhism, one of the newer schools of Tibetan Buddhism.

Phugtal Monastery a.k.a Phugtal Gompa is a Buddhist monastery located in the remote Lungnak Valley in south-eastern Zanskar, in the autonomous Himalayan region of Ladakh, in Northern India. The monastery is built around the natural cave which serves as an ideal place for buddhist monks.An amazing fact about this place is that the natural cave was there 2500 years ago before the monastery is built.

The only means of transport to Phugtal Monastery is to hitch a ride on a donkey or horse or choose to walk. Some hours drive from the city of Padnum in Zanskar reaches to the road towards the monastery. Almost 6-8 hours voyage through several barren mountain passes will take you to the monastery. In the middle of trek you will come across two villages CHA and ANMU. Trekkers always halt at these two villages in order to feel the mesmerized greenery which resembles peace. you will feel as if you have left all your prblems on chaos and enter into heaven a world of peace far awaaaaaayyyyyyy from the presssure of urban areas.A mystic beauty of Golden barren landscapes and the mountain paths take you to a different world altogether.
