More than ten days after the most awaited and extravagant party of the year, and people still can’t stop talking about all the brave and beautiful looks that different celebrities bore this year. To start with an actress, who’s closer to home, Priyanka Chopra, who reminded us a lot of the Mad Hatter although that was not her inspiration. She did become the root of many jokes here in India. But what we fail to understand is that the dress fit perfectly with this year’s theme, that was Camp. What is Camp, you ask? “Camp is an aesthetic style and sensibility that regards something as appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value. Camp opposes satisfaction and seeks to challenge.” It is the source of rebellions against the stereotypical idea of what beauty and fashion are supposed to look like.
While some celebrities truly hit it out of the park with their outfits, some found themselves in a tough spot as their outfits did not quite hit the mark. Lena Waithe and Kerby Jean-Raymond, stuck true to the theme and spoke all things Camp with their identical suits, with “Black Drag Queens Invented Camp” written across the back of Waithe’s suit. An outfit with a message that’s completely correct. Billy Porter arrived as a queen she is and a queen we do not deserve. Dressed all in gold and looking like an Egyptian Goddess, she definitely became the talk of the party. And one of the most Camp interesting looks belonged to Caroline Trentini, who wore a skeleton dress to the most exclusive party and she wore it quite well, I must add.
Another look that turned many heads, belonged to Jared Leto mostly because he brought two heads of his own. The cover girl for Vogue's issue for MET 2019 was Kim Kardashian, and she was truly dripping in Camp (pun intended). She looked like an absolute stunner in that dress that had each drop intricately set in the dress. I could see why Kanye decided to not dress up. Kim's dress would make up for all of it. The Crazy Rich Asians star, Constance Wu decided to make everyone hold their breaths with her very camp but gorgeous bead dress!
MET Gala this year also had many celebrities who played it safe and didn’t really dress according to the theme. They looked gorgeous, no doubt, but what is the point of a theme if it is not to be followed. Tom Brady and Giselle Bündchen, for example, wore what one would expec
t them to wear on any normal party. A suit for Tom and a very plain gown for Giselle. A bit of a let down, to be very honest, but one cannot expect everyone to be perfect every time right? So tell me, were your expectations from the biggest party of the year met?
