"Man is the architect of his own health and disease"

Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health.

The number of healthy and fit people in our country has taken a nosedive, thanks to the increasing popularity of fast food. Yes, this greasy, oily type of food is mostly responsible for India becoming full of pot bellied people. Not only this, the unhealthy and lazy lifestyle of people adds fuel to the fire. In this era of technology physical activities have taken a back seat. The new generation has been reduced to that of couch potatoes, spending their maximum time in front of computers, mobile phones and television.

Body mass index (BMI) is a simple index of weight-for-height that is commonly used to classify overweight and obesity in adults. It is defined as a person's weight in kilograms divided by the square of his height in meters (kg/m2).

For adults, WHO defines overweight and obesity as follows:

  • overweight is a BMI greater than or equal to 25; and

  • obesity is a BMI greater than or equal to 30.

My friends, please do not take this lightly. All this results in our mother India not being able to utilize all of its human resources. As increasing obesity in people leads to increase in number of fatal diseases like diabetes, heart attacks and whatnot.

However, we can do our bit in curbing this problem. It's upon us to ensure that we remain fit and healthy. This can be done by performing activities such as yoga, power yoga, running, gyming, etc. This will not only keep our weight in check, but also help our body in other number of ways like improving blood circulation and strengthening bones. By doing this we can keep all the harmful ailments and diseases like heart blockage, obesity and arthritis at bay. We should remember that " A healthy mind resides in a healthy body ". To utilize our mental potential, we have to be physically fit.

So do not overlook obesity and stay fit!
