Is The Media Free?

The following gave room for discussion with regard to pros and cons of journalism in India, in a conversation led by Madhu Trehan and Rajdeep Sardesai. Rajdeep Sardesai, spoke passionately about the media and its workings, the binding effect of politics on media and his thoughts on answerability.

People in media are often targeted for their ‘outspokenness’, which is a terrible and a toxic reality, for it is often this outspokenness,that brings to light the wrongdoings of those in power. He took the example of famous journalist Gauri Lankesh’s shooting, which happened right outside her residence. This almost incipient threat of violence has become increasingly common towards every deviating journalist. Rajdeep talked about how his children unfairly got trolled on social media, for no fault of their own. This cycle of hate only spreads chaos, by clipping the wings of freedom of expression.
