We all say, " Men are tough, women are in touch with their feelings. Men are providers, women are nurturers. Men should be strong, women should be physically attractive. These are nothing but stereotypical beliefs about gender differences which are remaining strong because of our cultural beliefs.

The distinction between male and female is very real and very deeply rooted in human nature and human physiology. In India, households are a primary site in which male privilege and control over women are expressed. With few lifestyle options outside of marriage, girls are expected to marry. Indian girls are told that their proper place is in the home fulfilling domestic duties and attending to the needs of men whereas males learn that they are superior to women and must exercise authority over them.

Is male really superior to female?

Some real differences between men and women are as follows:

  • Women’s skeletal structures have wider hips, broader facial bones, smaller chins, a longer trunk, and shorter legs than men.

  • Girls generally reach puberty two years earlier than boys do, and it takes the boys the rest of their lives to grow up.

  • Women live five years longer than men do. Men suffer a higher death rate throughout life than women do.

  • Men have larger hearts and lungs than women. Women have larger livers, stomachs, thyroid glands, and kidneys than men. Women have lower blood pressure and a faster heartbeat than men.

  • Men and women don't see in the same way: Male retina is thicker whereas the female retina is thinner.

  • Female babies like faces whereas male babies like moving objects: Boys likely to prefer gazing at toys and girls were more likely to look at the face.

  • Boys and girls like to draw different things: Most girls prefer drawing people, animals, and plants, arranged symmetrically and facing the viewers. Boys mostly draw action scenes with dynamic movements.

  • Females hear better than males: Females not only hear better but can discern between tones in the human voice.

  • Boys are more likely to take risks: Boys feel excited during a simulated collision while the girls reported feeling fearful.

  • Women are the only ones in their right minds: Studies show that men mostly use their brain’s left hemisphere to process information, while women are more skilled at using both hemispheres. This would literally mean that women are the only ones in their right minds.

  • Males have bigger brains which don’t mean they’re smarter: On average, male brains are about 10 per cent larger than female brains. But this is probably because on average, males are 10 per cent larger than females. Although males tend to do slightly better in math while females do slightly better with language, standardized intelligence tests show no statistically significant difference between males and females.
