Comics, short for comic books are considered to be one’s favorite pastime. They are a popular set of material among the young generation, with its beautifully illustrated pages and a story which is beyond our imagination. But have you ever wondered why these comic books are so popular?

Comic books provide the readers a fantastical world, where a character can be of any sort and anything. He could be the prodigal child destined to destroy the human race or an extra-terrestrial, bound to save humanity at any cost. To be honest, comics have created their own world, where the possibilities are infinite with an endless pit for imagination.

A comic also portrays the concept of the good versus the evil, the right versus the wrong. And who does it better than Stan lee? The Marvel Comics changed the course of history with its launch of their mightiest superheroes, the malicious villains and the intergalactic wars amongst each other. There are also stories which tell us that not all heroes wear capes and not every damsel is in distress.

Comic Con, you surely must have heard of, to be one of the largest gatherings in the world on the Pacific coast. This is a convention which features on comic books and graphic novels and people from all over the world come to visit this four day event held in the month of July.

Reading comic books can help children understand the concepts easily and help them love reading. Visual learning is a good tool compared to our textbooks. A study shows that a human brain processes images 60,000 times faster than a text does. So, you could say it’s more effective for your brain. It also helps us see and think differently and also increases our interactive skills.

The Amar Chitra Katha, one of India’s best selling comics, consists of stories retold from the great Indian mythology, history, fables and folklore in a comic book layout. Anant Pai or dearly known as Uncle Pai, created these comics to teach Indian children about their cultural heritage. He also found the Tinkle Comics, this generation’s most loved book which not only consists of comic strips but also some puzzles and games. From the age-old classics like ‘Tantri the Mantri’, ‘Suppandi’ to the newest stories like ‘Butterfingers’ and ‘Defective Detectives’, every story has its own hilarious, rib-tickling and amusing narratives, enthralling the audience throughout the story.

Be it books like the Archie comics, featuring the fictional teenagers Archie Andrews, Jughead Jones and the rest of the gang or the Manga Comics, like One Piece, though these are comics of different origins and created worlds apart, their stories and quite mesmerizing and compelling. They happen to create permanent residence in one’s heart spellbinding them with its charm and entertaining strips.

For some, comics are a nostalgic reminder of their childhood days while for others a sweet one of how they snuck around the house hiding and reading them secretly. Comics are eternal which will continue growing as the world gets bigger and imagination even bigger.
