With the fast building world of science and technology, we humans have surely upgraded well. When it comes to the realm of books and knowledge, of how we’ve taken a step to modernize our libraries into digital ones, one of the most debated topics is whether an e-book is better than a printed one or is it the other way around?

Like every other device, an e-book has got its own set of pros and cons, so does a printed book. Let’s take a walk through the advantages of these materials.

When it comes to an e-book,

1.They’re easy to carry around

The advantage of having an e-book is that one can carry thousands of books all the time. It’s like having an entire library in a backpack. E-books are light weighted and easily portable.

For example, if you had to carry this really heavy economics textbook for the class and your bags already full. What would you do?

Carry it in your hands all the way to the bus station?
In its place, you could just download the book on your e-reader, which helps save time and effort.

2.Has a built-in dictionary

Instead of going back and forth to refer the meaning of the words that you didn’t know of, from an actual life size dictionary, the in-built dictionary in an e-reader helps you find the meaning right away.

3.They’re versatile

An e-reader not only carries hundreds of books, it could be also used for surfing over the web, listen to music when you’re bored but also play games too!

4.Takes up less space

Unlike the hardbound editions, an e-reader takes up less space and avoids clutter. One can store it alphabetically or according to writers, genres or publications.

5.Saves trees

An e-reader, though a bit expensive could actually help save a number of trees from being cutting down.

6.Customization factor

An e-reader gives the opportunity to customize the material, just the way one would like to read it. It helps to alter the font size and style according to the needs.

7.Read in the dark

One of the biggest advantages of having an e-book is that one can read it in the dark or at any place with dim lighting. Your reading won’t be disrupted even if there’s a power outage.

As for a printed book,

1.It’s Authentic

Printed books are physical reminder of one’s childhood memories. The feel of paper to hands, the warmth and smell, is quite a different experience after all.

You could also scribble key points, highlight and draw on the edges, which is something an e-reader does provide too but they aren’t the same.

2.Sharing

Sharing books physically develops a sense of warmth towards one and another. This could be an amazing opportunity to meet and make new acquaintances.

3.Saves electricity and theft-resistant

A printed book does not require electricity to run. What if you were reading your e-book in the bathtub and it accidentally fell into it? Your electronic is gone for good. But in case of a book, you could dry it out using a blow dryer. No harm is done.

Though there’s a tough competition on which ones better than the others, it all comes down to the point that, one way or the other it is up to the readers, and how they prefer reading and storing their books and journals.
