Ever wondered why people love dogs so much? They are the creatures who have been with humans from the past 20,000 to 40,000 years! Dogs are one of the best pets in the world. Though cat lovers will argue, let’s just all agree that cats are more evil than dogs. (In a harmless way) Dogs love to be loved, they crave for affection. They never get enough of the love and affection. They are always ready for a good belly rub, but a cat now. Well, all cat owners will agree when I say that cats have mood swings. They have a superior sense of self and come to you only when they want affection. You cannot dare touch them when they are asleep, eating or cleaning themselves.

There’s a reason why dogs are given tags of loyalty and unconditional love. After a long day at work when you come back home, your dog is the first person to welcome you. Dogs don’t judge you, they do not care if you’re poor or rich. Even if you feed them once, they will remain loyal to you throughout their life. Obviously, they have their unbearable mischief. I have three dogs at home and believe me, it’s like having toddlers around. It’s been days since I’ve read my newspaper as no newspaper survives these beasts. They chew of shoes like it’s the yummiest snack and sometimes, they just create havoc to gain attention. It’s irritating when you can’t even scold them because their guilty face is enough to even melt the Himalayas!

They are the best therapists anyone can get because they spread love and happiness. No matter how bad your day goes, you forget your worries when you see your dog jump with excitement, chase its own tail or even when it’s just asleep. The most beautiful part is that no matter how unsuccessful you are in your personal life, your dog will always think of you as its hero. There are so many movies on dogs that show how loyal and loving they can be. My most favourite one will be Hachiko. Hachiko is the story of a Japanese dog who waited for his master near the station every day even after the death of his master. There’s also a statue of the dog near the station (Shibuya Station) in Tokyo, Japan.

There are examples in mythology too that depict the loyalty of dogs. Odysseus, the Greek hero, when came back to his homeland disguised as a begger, the only creature who recognised him was his dog, Argos. Even after twenty years of being away from home, Argos, who cannot even get up to greet his master, recognises Odysseus and wags his tail. But because he cannot disclose his true identity, Odysseus passes by and Argos dies. Another example from Hindu mythology, would be of Yudhisthira and the dog in the final chapters of Mahabharata. The Pandavas along with their wife, Draupadi, decide to ascend a mountain as a part of their final journey and a dog accompanies them. However, Yudhisthira, along with the dog, is the only one who successfully ascends the mountain because has done no sins and has no failings. When Lord Indra comes to take Yudhisthira to Heaven, he refuses to go without the dog. It is later known that the Dog is Lord Dharma who always accompanied Yudhisthira.

Aren’t these enough to prove that Dog is a man’s best friend?
