Naxal Problem is the biggest problem, the country is facing today. The casualties suffered by the security forces are much more than the casualties suffered by the security forces in J&K and North-East combined. The problem has multiplied due to continuous neglect and support from the Political Parties for their election purpose. Today, Naxals are calling the shots, dictating terms, killing police personnel at will. The naxalite groups are increasing with the time and they are also spreading themselves in the dense forests of North, North-East and also in the South region. The entire locality in these regions is a free zone for their organization and operations they carry on as there is not much legal authority present there.

Start of movement:
It traces its origin from the far west i.e. West Bengal in 1960s. It started from a village, Naxalbari, near Siliguri in 1967. Their leaders were Charu Mazumdar and Kanu Sanyal. They led the peasants, landless workers and weaker section against the feudal landlords who committed irregularities against these workers. The state government thrashed the movement by killing or arresting their leaders. Then after laying low for a few years, it emerged under different names as PWG and MCC. Naxals and Mao are same. As long as these people are exploited and social justice continues to be denied their base will expand.

what is being done to check their growth:
1. By development of neglected areas.
2. Providing job to youths.
3. Opening the channel for discussion.

Another method being adopted is Engaging the Naxals which is done by:
1. Opening new Police stations.
2. Recruitment of retired officers as advisors.
3. Deployment of around 70,000 troops to confront the Naxals.
4. Campaign against Naxals for killing innocent people.
5. State being equipped by latest technology and weapons.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has been trying its hand in weakening and eliminating the strength of the naxalites and other extremist groups who in the name of welfare for the society and their community have done many serious crimes resulting in deaths and harassment of innocent people.

The need of the current time is the effective and proper training provided to the security forces and increase in their number. It is advisable for the security forces to get immense training under the Army forces so that they can meet the extent of operations that the extremist forces carry and defeat them.
