It's evident that literature is nonsense in most of the cases , revealing the absurd thoughts generated by sonething we can call 7th sense of human psychology. Literature is nonsense because it mines the unexplored sense of human mind mind. But what if "nonsense" is itself a literature? A genre?
Don't think the word nonsense here is used as devoid of sense. Actually these expressions and languaged used in this type of literature is apparently carrying no meaning but contains a deep indication towards some socio-political facts , sometimes some psychological matrices. Two Victorian era writers - Edward Lear and Lewis Carrol - the peron who offered us a trip to the wonderland of Alice , gave birth to this genre.
Literary Nonsense is all about turning the logical world upside down , but ultimately it signifies some ironical truths of society and life in much greater sense , as was done by Sukumar Ray in his poems , the Bengali guy who gave birth to literary nonsense in Indian literature.
This genius first tried to Indianize "Alice in Wonderland" in his immortal nonsense long story "হযবরল" (pronounced as HoJoBoRoLo in english) . As an example how literary nonsense makes greater sense in several cases , we can refer one of his rhyme for children where a mother-ghost is pampering her son in some unusual ways but just like a human mother. This actually is trying to say that , the love of mother is beyond discrimination despite differentiation of this inequal social structure ; the mom-ghost is actually indicating here the unexplored , ignored and hated class of society. In another poem he has made a ballad of several strange laws of the ruler of heaven and hell in a very funny way and thus actually taunts the "Emergency" situation of a country.
Anyway one ore thing is to be pointed out about literary nonsense. Often it's found that the words or names of animals/trees/places used here are containing no particular meaning , rather only juggling of words they're. "Jabberwocky" , "JubJub bird" or
" Frumious Bandersnatch" are some examples (Alice in Wonderland).
But don't try to compare literary nonsense to fairy tales . Fairy tales is totally imaginary world with imaginary characters and incident whereas literary nonsense is talking about an absurd world , where logics are totally ignored initially but having a great linkage to truth of life.
There're causes , there're effects but even they are imaginary too. A lot of repetitions are found i.e. nonsense interjections are used repeatedly.
But only theoretical explanation isn't enough to understand this unexplored verse , let's have some examples :
1. Lewis Carrol used the word "Mimsy"- a nonsense term , as a combination of flimsy and miserable. The term has no meaning if u can't derive the meaning.
2. Sukumar Ray , I think , described "death" in the greatest way when he was about to die , in his best creation "Abol Tabol" , a nonsense ballad. Now the thing is you won't make out the meaning of the bengali words , so I'm trying to give an outline in english ; he wrote :
"Some moonly dew of ancient ages,
With paper-rolled horse-eggs,
Eyelash cuddles eternal sleep,
I stop singing and roll into deep."
(Totally translated by me although I know I can never reach that level)
And here lies the greatest truth i.e. literary nonsense is incapable of being translated because once they're deviated from its original language, loose the essence and emotions.
So here I end it because it will take million of examples to explain it totally. Actually it's all yours responsibility to dig out the inherent truth of a literary nonsense, which is actually not a nonsense.
Try to write some literary nonsense in the comment box to have fun.
