Dépaysement

The literal translation for this word is "un-country-ing". It also means somewhat the same. When you have to move to a whole new place suddenly, you feel like a fish out of water. You feel disoriented, uprooted and not fitting in. That feeling is exactly what Dépaysement is.

L’appel du vide

Imagine the feeling when you are bungee jumping or sky diving. All the height is terrific yet interesting. That jumping-from-height-feeling is L'appel du Vide. The literal translation is " the call of the void". It refers to the feeling or urges to jump from higher spots. These feelings usually visit tourists when they are enjoying the awestruck view of Paris from the top of the Eiffel tower on a beautiful sunny day. It is a disturbing feeling though.

Frappadingue

This word is actually a blend of two words: frapper- to hit and dingue- crazy. As amusing as it is, it actually points to the craziest of friends and their explosive personality. Frappadingue explains someone who is crazy, sometimes spontaneously and dangerously. This is the most interesting and amusing emotion in the dictionary of nearly abstract emotions.

L'espir d' escalir

Ever come across a situation where you really wanted to pass a hilarious comment or a really witty comeback but the moment has passed? This emotion is just for you. Its literal translation is staircase wit and has a very interesting history. This word was invented by Diderot, a philosopher, in the 18th century. He always thought of splendid comments only while walking through the staircase on the way out from an argument. That explains the "staircase" and the "wit".

Retrouvailles

This one is a heartwarming emotion. Retrouvailles is the feeling you get when meeting a friend or a loved one after a really long time. In some cases, after a long separation. Like I said, heartwarming. You could say, "on va feter les retrouvailles". And that sentence explains that you are going to celebrate a reunion, the emotional one that takes place between loved ones. The root of this word is the verb retrouver which means to rediscover.
