Literacy has traditionally been thought of as reading and writing. Although these are essential components of literacy,today our understanding of literacy encompasses much more.It doesn’t means only the ability to read and write but it also means the ability to understanding the nature,environment ,the people around us.
Literacy starts from childhood. When child start speaking, his literacy journey starts.The family,teachers,neighbors are all the components which helps in the journey.

Education is the most powerful instrument to fight against poverty as well as inequality.For individual, for country literation is the most important thing to adjust with current researches.Literacy is the key of creating new things.If we know some basics then only we can apply it, can create something from it.It is an effective tool to bring about social changes.Life becomes easier due to education.Education gives job opportunities,and comfortable living.The ability to read,write and communicate connects people to one another and empowers them to achieve things they never thought possible.
LITERACY RATE IN INDIA
The overall literacy rate in the country may have gone up to 74.4%,but the drop in the illiteracy rate has not matched the increase in population. Kerala is the most literate state in India,with 93.91% literacy.Bihar is the least literate state in India, with a literacy of 63.82%.
IMPORTANCE OF LITERACY
The importance of literacy can be stated at two levels: National and Individual.Literacy is critical to economic development as well as individual and community well-being.Literacy is an important starting point that brings awareness in people to work towards a better living. It helps them to break free of shackles of ignorance, avoid getting manipulated,and being left out of the mainstream.At an individual level,the increased confidence of every newly literate person to achieve the impossible bears heartwarming testimony to the power of literacy.Having good literacy skills enhances a country’s quality of life by reducing poverty.Lowering unemployment.
Persons with adequate literacy skills maintain better health through their ability to understand and interpret health information.One needs adequate literacy skills to participate and function happily within – and contribute to – one’s communities.
Effective literacy skills open the doors to more educational and employment opportunities so that people are able to pull themselves out of poverty and chronic employment.
Education also produces well-cultured and wise men.It is often said that the children of today are the citizens of tomorrow.Strong literacy and numeracy skills lay the foundation for all students to succeed at school, at work and their daily life.
