Poisonous lakes are one of the most eerie bodies on our planet. These are the top 5 lakes that are known to be uninhabitable:

Blue lake (Kabardino, Russia)

The water in the lake is not from rivers or streams, but underground springs feed into the lake. The blue color of the lake comes from the hydrogen sulfide content, measured 258m deep and getting deeper due to erosion of rock at its base. Some scientists believe the lake hides largest underwater cave system.

Lake Natron (Tanzania)

This infamous lake kills and mummifies bodies. The victims are preserved in stone in their final posture, resulting mummified birds, bats wash up on the shore frequently. Micro-organisms in water give it a bright orange color on the shore, slowly fading to bright red near the centre. Fumes from the lake often scare away large predators whereas small preys take shelters in the fumes, finally ending their lives. High alkaline and hydrogen content contributes to soda and salt discharge in the lake.

Lake Nyos (Cameroon)

For centuries the lake supplied water to the neighboring villages peacefully. But, on august 21st 1986 it released a thick cloud of gas into the areas close by killing thousands of people, animals, bird even insects. Scientists from all over the world gathered to take a closure look at the incident and find a reason of the happening. It was later discovered that, the lake sits on an active volcanic crater. Huge amount of carbon dioxide suddenly erupted through the cracks at the bottom of the lake. When pressure raised it released the lethal gas that carried by the winds into areas close by caused the catastrophe killing almost 1500 people.

Lake of death (Italy)

The lake of Death is completely uninhabitable. Water in it contains high concentration of sulfuric acid. Any creature entering it dies within matter of minutes. Rumors claim that, Italian mafias used this lake to dissolve the bodies of their victims, although there`s no proof if that’s true mostly because all of the victims have already dissolved.

Lake Pustoye (Russia)

Pustoye in Russian it means ‘blank’. This mysterious lake doesn’t support any animal life.Although there are plenty of lakes that can`t sustain life, but the surprising fact is, chemical composition of this lake is safe for human consumption. Several living rivers flow into it. Local residents even tried to stalk the lake with fish, but they soon died. Scientist have tried to study the mystery, but they are still inconclusive.
