Are we capable of answering this profound question? And, even if we derive a seemingly logical meaning of life, what about the purpose? Is the meaning same as the purpose? This happens to be the most vaguely answered question in the entire history of human race.

The only time when you would have pondered this thought provoking yet, absurd question, is probably when you were having a tough time in your life, probably you were not happy and in the worst case you were neck deep in the unending miseries of the materialistic world. Unfortunately, the trail to find answer to this existential question leads you to nowhere, but, turns out to be a futile brainstorming exercise leaving you in utter sadness and desolation. And, this is the time when someone reaches at the most cynical answer: “Life has no meaning at all”. Scientists define life as a continuous effort for survival and propagation of genetic material from one generation to another. Does that mean we are born to eat, sleep, and repeat; not exactly.

It must be said that there is no meaning which we can find outside ourselves as a species, and there is no particular answer to this. It is only when you would delve deep into yourself, and try to find the best possible answer to this question.

Everybody has a different perspective towards life, for instance, a monk, who leaves all the comforts of life and moves to places in the perpetual search of truth and salvation, may have a purpose as different as chalk and cheese when compared to an enterprisingly successful businessman. So, the meaning of life is indeed defined by your very own purpose.

At this point, it seems that meaning and purpose are not equivalent. And, if so, then, meaning is something which is more spiritual and related to the consciousness of aware beings. Does this imply that life is meaningful to only highly conscious species like, humans, and not others, or it is meaningful to every living creature, from the tiny and single celled amoeba to sophisticated human beings or even higher?Factually speaking, we haven’t yet reached at a final and an overarching definition of life. The interminable discourse is open and every time a new life form is discovered, the existing definition is redefined to suit our purposes, only for some time. So, if life is not defined, how can someone define its meaning?

It is only up to you, if you want to undertake the ceaseless endeavor of finding the answer, or give your life a “meaning”.
