Mahatma Gandhi had once said “Women is the companion of man, gifted with equal mental capacities. She has a right to participate in every minute detail activities of man and she has an equal right of freedom and liberty with him. She is entitled to a supreme Place”

It was a women who dominated the elections to the 14th Lok Sabha. Yet, few women feature in the newly-constituted Parliament. This is not surprising; women’s empowerment is a well-known political mantra during elections calculated only to garner votes.

Eighth of March is celebrated every year as International Women’s Day. It shows that the women of today has come of age, so to say, and wants to be dignified life of equality with man. The slogan being raised today by the women of the world is : Equality ,dignity and self-respect is WHAT WE WANT. But then the question arises are they really equal.

I question myself in this era where respect for each other is fading away at this fast rate how we can expect equality for women in this male dominant society. Women are still objectified as a tool as a material possession. Things are getting worse than ever. Women are asked to work but then are they really getting the basic amenities. Women are forced to stay late in offices and commercial institutions for the purpose of finishing off targets to achieve more out of more and getting nothing out of his hectic work.

Why can’t we have a sensitive approach for this? Women are allowed to work, now that’s great, but are they really given the environment and amenities to survive in the work for a long run. This gives us a food for thought. In this advancing technological world we are forgetting the courteousness.

Harmony and peace are out of question in this scenario. It is surprising that in spite of so many laws women still continue to live in stress and strain of male domination and manifests itself in form of all kinds of hardships and indignities meted out to them. To ensure equality of status for our women we still have miles to go.

Violence is another issue and becoming alarming in India. Today in almost every stratum of our social life, women are treated as inferior creatures. We May go about shouting of constitutional equality amongst men and women, but we have a long run to go for this. Reforms and changes will start from us and the youth. Such practices must be avoided and equality in real terms and in all aspects of live must be shared by both men as well as women. Only then we will be able to see a truly free nation and peace in the society.
