Now, we shall discuss about
French traditional dresses
and their origins.
But, to understand French
dressing culture we need to
study a bit of france’s history.
France cannot be described without telling about French revolution. French revolution spread like a wildfire through all parts of the country.

The main protest was against the monarchy and his cruel ways like taxation and feudalism which exploited the third estate comprising of peasants, farmers etc.

It was a large scale protest mainly led by the Jacobins and their leader mammalian Robespierre.
They succeeded in throwing the monarchy and established a proper republic in the country.
The Jacobins abolished many prevalent partial laws existing in the society. For example everyone should be addressed either monsieur or madam. No other title should be given to any individual of any estate.

In this way they also made many changes in dresses which eventually became a part of the French tradition. Now, what changes happened in france which affected both social and cultural lifestyles of people. The jacobins made it mandatory for all the men to wear stockings and clothes colour of their flag. It was seen as a symbol of their patriotism

Women on the other hand suffered a lot due to the prevelant patriarchial society. They were forced to wear tight corsetts which were so wide at low that they had to suffer a lot while walking.

These were the few changes that ocurred in the citizens of france’s dressing style. Now we will see how this morphed to form the present day dress.World wars and their affectsThe 2 world wars during 1914 and 1939 had an adverse efffect in the French citizens lifestyle.

Due to the men at war there was a shortage of labour in allthe factories. Factories made war materials and without manforce they lagged in supplies.

As a result now the women of the houses came out. They supported their householed cared their children and also started working in factories.

Large mill owners also liked this as they were cheaper in annual income but provided same outcome as their counterparts. Now, as women started to work outside and earn money they started leading their lives by their own’s will.

They grew bold, confident and fashion conscious. Hence, they broke the typical norms and wore dresses which were comfortable.

They started wearing dresse that were easy and comfortable both for their work. They started experimenting on various designs.

Eventually they settled upon a short skirts. It was a startling move, but the women were stern to not change them.

Many protested putting forward the argument that it’s sin to wear any dress above the knees.
They were retaliated with the thought that if they didn’t work, who would?
Hence, france slowly but surely changed it’s dressing pattern in alighnment to the society. On the other hand their the males discarded their tight stockings. They opted tofull trouser.

They found it rather disturbing to go on the war with such dress.
People also used their dressing in order to prove themselves superior to other countries.
A small difference men and women morphed equally to modern styles but the men’s changing was seen centralized to paris.

People who used to live in the stockings were so adamant that it hardly matter burn their old culture and accept something new

We can still see many people who like dressing themselves according to their old tradition. But then again french dresses got changed slowly but surely.

Cotton replaced silk due to it’s properties of sweat absorption and comfortability
More and more designs were applied by designers and tailors to please the higher classes.
Gradually, france became a symbol of fashion due to it’s strong past which led a concrete foundation stone.

France, now.
