The word animation comes from the Latin word animatus, filled with life. Even before invention of the cinema, people realized that if the human eye sees a series of images that change at a rate of at least 24 frames a second, the brain can be tricked into thinking that it's an image.

These are the first films in which some of the most famous animated characters made their first appearances.

1. Mickey mouse (Plane Crazy 1928)

"I only hope that we never lose the sight of one thing that it was all started by a mouse."-Walt Disney

The mascot of the Walt Disney company, originally named as Mortimer Mouse was created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks at the Walt Disney studio in 1928.

Plane crazy was Walt Disney's first Mickey Mouse cartoon and was silent.

Two months later Mickey appeared in Steamboat Willie, the first Mickey Mouse cartoon with sound. Although third, but this movie is considered as Mickey's debut, because it was the first to find a producer.

2. Donald duck (The wise little hen 1934)

It was originally known as the Donald Fauntleroy duck. It was probably inspired by the legendary cricketer Donald Bradman after he was dismissed against New York West Indies for a duck. Clarence Nash was the voice of Donald Duck for 15 years. The Donald Duck anti Hitler film Der Fuehrer's face (1942) won an Oscar.

3. Tom and Jerry (Puss get the boots 1940)

Tom and Jerry was a common phrase for people indulging in notorious activities in the 19th century.

The very first Tom and Jerry cartoon was nominated for an Oscar. The characters also appeared in a full length movie in 1992.

4. The Flintstones (The Flintstone Flyer 1960)

This was the first episode of the Flintstones to be broadcasted on TV. It went on to become the longest-running cartoon series until it was overtaken by The Simpsons.

These were some of the characters which bring a wide smile on our faces no matter what the situation is!
