WHY UNIFORM CODE ?
“Mom, why this school dress? I hate it” Said Riya.
“That’s fine. You will have to wear it. No choice kid.” said Riya’s mom.
Have you ever wondered why do we have to wear uniform?
We all have been to the institutions where school uniform is strictly implied. But does it ever come to your mind that why is this uniform code followed?
Uniform shows that a person is a part of an organisation. Wearing it says that everyone is together. It gives a sense of identity. If a person is wearing it with pride, it means that he or she is being respectful towards the organisation. Sense of unity is reflected.
Wearing same uniform reduces distraction and improves learning too. Also, importantly, uniform means that student doesn’t have to worry about the peer pressure when it comes to their clothes. When everyone is dressed like or same, worrying about what you look like isn’t so important. There is no existence of competition of being dressed in latest trend which puts a great deal of financial pressure on those who are economically poverty stricken. Instead of spending money on clothes each month, buy only 2-3 uniforms and save the rest of the money.
Also, person don't have to waste time picking out clothes every morning. Waking up extra early to pick your clothes out is not a good idea.
Also, a big issue is getting constantly tormented by people. At least bullies have one less target. It is hard to make fun of someone when they are also wearing the same dress.
Similarly, it gives an impression of strictness so as to maintain a sense of order and rules. Children in school uniforms may find it easier to stay focused on their studies, complete homework after school, build friendships, or prepare themselves for a vocational career. It reduces socioeconomic distinction that can be made between the students and also keep the kids safe as schools can identify intruders quickly because they aren’t in the needed uniform.
But obviously, each debatable topic has comments against and in favour also. There have been a lot of criticisms in this regard. Psychologists suggest that,
The definition of uniform is clothes worn by students to identify them as a part of a school but in reality it supresses individualism and freedom to express.
They also say that sense of belongingness comes from the heart and not from uniform or appearance.
From my opinion, uniforms are really very important as dress code promotes a more serious school atmosphere which emphasizes academics and promotes good behaviour.
