The 1930s was the time of The Great Depression but many of us aren’t aware that a revolutionary company LEGO was formed at that time. It brought a huge revolution in the toy industry and in 2015; it became the highest valued toy company.
Their star product? few millimeters long interlocking brick! Can you imagine how this small toy just changed the whole billion dollar industry! It’s well said that “great revolution takes place with a small step”, and as we all know that the greatest invention by man is “the wheel”! Surprising, isn’t?
Jumpcut from the 1930s to 2010s, a company called Kite Bricks, took this toy to the next level. They instantly became a nightmare for many construction companies. Their idea was compact, less time-consuming, more energy friendly and pocket-friendly.
The founder, Ronnie Zohar, who owned another company that applied a black film over windows for insulation, came up with this idea. Although the black sheet would provide better insulation, the major problem was in the traditional rods and bricks which could easily expand or contract depending on the climate. Thus, the heat was dissipated easily.Though he admitted that he never took any idea from original LEGO, but we can conclude that LEGO has influenced this type of construction.
There are many advantages of using this mode of construction; you get bricks with tailor-made sizes and insulation. A single unit interlocks with another hence consumes less time and minimizes the damage for installing other appliances and installations.
Furthermore, the bricks allow faster, cheaper, stronger and more precise installations. They can produce expected results even in the grade five earthquake zones. Their hollow structure not only provides necessary insulation but also the structural strength.
In an interview Zohar said he would like to see people in Africa and other parts of the underdeveloped area to use his prototype, to get a thermally- insulated home using the same cost they would have spent on tin houses. Overall, we can say that Zohar is like Elon Musk of the construction business. His prototype and motive are very clear and in the future, we can see much more modular houses like these around us.
