India’s ancient scriptures allocate great significance to one’s name.In accordance with the sacred Hindu scriptures,a person has two forms: sonic and physical, and these two forms have to be in harmony with each other for the well being of the person.Realizing the importance of a name, the naming ceremony or Namkaran was introduced by the ancient seers.Namkaran is one of the most important of the 16 Hindu rituals that should be strictly held after the child’s birth. It is a naming ceremony that is performed to choose anewborn’s name as per the astrological naming rules and traditional methods. It is a kind of happy ritual where all the family members come together to celebrate and welcome the new born baby.

A birth chart is drawn according to the position of the stars and planets during the time of a child’sbirth. The birth chart thus devised indicates the alphabets whose sound waves are in accordance with the physical form of the infant. After the letters are determined by the astrologer the newborn is given a name that is auspicious and of proper meaning, with the first letter of the name being one of the letters indicated by the birth chart. The initial letter of the name is considered to be very sacred and is traditionally determined according to the ‘Janam Nakshatra’ or the birth star of a child. At times, the name selected is based on a deity or even a dead ancestor. It is generally believed that a boy’s name should consist of even numbered letters (2,4,6,8) while a girl’s name should consist of odd numbered letters (3,5,7,9), 11 being the most suited for both the genders.

Each time a child would be addressed by his or her name, the sound form of the child with its latent energy and auspicious meaning would impact the child accordingly. This is the science behind the Namkaran ceremony.According to the science of acoustics, repeating a name severaltimes has many definite effects, both good and bad.Usually good names will have an effect that is beneficial and agreeable while bad names will undoubtedly pave the way for adverse effects.Usually spiritual names and names of gods have a pleasant effect as their sound and physical forms are consistent and not different. This is one of the reasons why the sacred mantras have to be chanted repeatedly multiple times for the desired outcomes.

The chanting of a god’s name is as influential as chanting a holy mantra.

However, these days,no significance is attributed to the naming of a child as per the traditions and rituals.More often than not, we see parents who are unbothered by the age old norms naming the children as per their fancies and whims. Lack of adequate knowledge of Hinduism and science behind these rites and rituals is the main reason for the ignorance of the modern society towards such traditional practices.

Subsequently, as a result, the child faces adversity in every turn of his life. When the physical form of a man is different from his sonic form, it produces in drastic effect in his life. It’snot a wonder these days to see people changing their names or correcting the spelling to experience success and goodness in their lives. As the saying goes, “There is a lot in a name” is an absolute truth that has to be revered and understood by all of us.
