Does this sound strange? Isn't knowing what we want the first step to achieve anything? And yet this is where the self deception starts and we deviate from our path.

What we think we want is usually borrowed from other's idea of what we should want. For example, good academic marks, a secure job, settling down at the right time, having kids at the right time. Or maybe it is based on other's idea of what we should not want. For example, career switches, low academic scores, staying single for too long or it can be anything.

These 'shoulds’ and ‘should nots’ are so deeply ingrained in us, and we are so identified with them that it becomes difficult to differentiate between what we really want and the wants we have imposed on ourselves.
