National Grandparents Day is a secular holiday celebrated in various countries, with official recognition in some, and occurring on various days of the year, either as one holiday or sometimes as a separate Grandmothers’ Day and Grandfathers’ Day.

The story behind to celebrate Grandparents Day

Marian McQuade hoped to establish a national day that would honour grandparents, and in 1970 she began a campaign to do so. McQuade raised awareness about senior citizens throughout the 1970s. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter declared the first Sunday after Labor Day to be National Grandparents Day.

The purpose behind to celebrate thisDay

The purpose of the holiday, as stated in the preamble to the statute, is “to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children, and to help children become aware of the strength, information, and guidance older people can offer. Grandparents need their children and grandchildren as well. The movie “The Mailbox” conveys how important these relationships are to the elderly. It tells the story of an old widow named Leethe who loved her children, all living some distance from her, and longed to receive letters from them. She made daily walks from her house down a long pathway to her mailbox, anxiously anticipating a letter. But repeatedly she was disappointed.

We are busy, but we should take time out for our grandparents and spend time with them because, at one point in time, they did the same for us. Here’s how to spend more time with them.

  1. Get your grandparents a gift.

  2. Spend the day with them.

  3. Hang out with your grandparents.

  4. Listen to their life stories.

  5. Love them with all of your heart.

  6. Watch the grandparents’ favourite movie together as a family.

  7. Have the whole family cook a few of Grandma’s favourite recipes together. Of course, she will enjoy supervising and teaching!

  8. Take grandparents to visit the houses where they grew up or some other memorable spots.

  9. Invite grandparents over to play a favourite board game from their youth.

  10. Call them, just ask them how they are and how their day went. Do it once a week and if you want, call them every day.

“Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children.”

— Alex Haley

“Truth be told, being a grandma is as close as we ever get to perfection. The ultimate warm sticky bun with plump raisins and nuts. Clouds nine, ten, and eleven.”

— Bryna Nelson Paston
