History of Syrian Crisis

It all began when Bashar-Al-Assad stepped in as the President of Syria, following in the foot steps of his father and former President Hafez-Al-Assad.

What started as a minor rift with the government -due to lack of political expression and freedom, when people were arrested for indecent actions against the government ;soon turned into a full-fledged war between the so-called Rebels and Syrian government.

By 2012 the entire country had been divided into four sects:

  • The Russia and Iran backed Syrian government military troops

  • The US, Saudi and Turkey backed anti-government rebel troops

  • The Kurdish forces, who demand a separate state, and

  • The ISIS -Al Qaeda and other Jihadist groups

The entire brunt of which was borne by innocent citizens who had nothing to do with the war (Why is it always that those who never want a war suffer the most??)

Blood-sheds, air strikes, mournings, fiery processions, bomb attacks and chemical warfare soon became the country's plight. Many other countries also joined the war for their own interests which escalated the otherwise petty situation seriously.

The various forces began instigating communities against each other. This led to serious tensions between Shia, Sunni and Kurdish communities, all of whom now wanted a separate state with a separate leader.

Millions of people were killed, many were left homeless, some even lost their families while many others were forced to flee from Syria to the impoverished neighboring countries of Lebanon and Jordan, where the atmosphere itself wasn't apt for them, but at-least they had a system stable than their own country!!

Syria soon became a budding ground for terrorist activities, with IS and Al-Qaeda exploiting the situation to ensure a strong ground for spreading terrorism in the entire world. Tourism saw a steep decline, black-outs became common, schools and colleges were closed as were the shops and private companies. The economy went downhill. Unemployment, Malnutrition and Starvation was the sight of this already cash-strapped economy.

Curfews became common, Police were given the authority to shoot whom-so-ever appeared to be a rebel, as a result, millions of innocents were shot to death while millions other were either kidnapped or went missing.

Talks of peace have been rescheduled more than twice, but brought no positive results. While Assad's troop has been able to re-organize much of the country's lost territory under it's belt-the cities of Aleppo and Palmyra being some of the biggest victories, it hasn't done much to prevent the uprising.

The rebels want Assad to step down as the President, while a leader of their choice to be chosen as the next representative of the country.

The future of Syria is under threat

Syria is a city of beauty, a land of six world heritage sites - though most of it has been either destroyed or fallen prey to the many bombings and strikes that have happened in the past few years, there is still a hope, a hope that one day Syria will regain it's lost honor, a hope that one day Syria will stand up and strong to face all odds. Miracles happen everyday, who knows Syria might some-day become the biggest economy of the world and re-enforce our belief in the single ray of light that appears after every dark tunnel!
