India is supposedly the fastest growing economy at this point, and there's almost no doubt we are going to take over the top spot in the next few years. But what about it? Is that all that we want? How do we give ourselves the credit of all this achievement when not all of its citizens were equally involved?

Even though for every 100 boys in this country, 90 girls are born, but for every 100 male workers only 26 female workers. Indian women contribute to almost ⅙ portion in the economy of the country, one if the lowest among many other countries.

Although there is rapid increase in education of women, we have more girls in classrooms than child brides but then what..after getting educated..where do these women go? Let me guess..to save her family from breaking into pieces. To put the peanut butter on your bread, to fix her husband's tie, brewing the coffee for her mother-in-law and taking good wife pledges.

A recent report says that almost 48% of women leave their jobs and career in the midday to fulfill their “duties” in their family. It's amazing to see how people think that a child is a woman's responsibility alone while the bank account is solely the man's.In a survey in 2012, 84% of Indians agreed that men have more right to work than women when jobs are scarce.

Even if some women decide to pursue a stable job, it's just another argument all together. As today, in almost every sector across rural and urban India women earn only 62.5% of what the men earn.

The wage gap is everywhere which only considers a difference in gender and throws out the possibilities of equal experience, equal effort, equal amount of time and equal amount of work.

The problem here is not just about the policies and opportunities. It's true that there are very little favourable circumstances for women to work, for eg unfriendly office environment, improper maternity leave schedule etc. But what's more hard hitting is the mindset. People have started educating their daughters not to get her a good salary but get her a suitable boy. The country where Lakshmi is considered as the goddess of Fortune and wealth, happens to be also one of the countries where the Lakshmis must not yank out their in-laws and earn more than the husband.

We really don't want women to do well, it's as simple as that. We are insecure that their capabilities will outshine the very less hardworking thousands of other employees. To consider the fact that if women got paid for all the housework they do, it would almost give a boost of billions to trillions of dollars to the economy.

Not only does a working women contribute better to a child's upbringing but also has a lesser chance of getting beaten up at work than at home by her husband. So there's definitely some scope of improvement.

According to World Bank India could boost it's growth percentage from 1% to 9% if only 50% of it's women joined the workforce.

All these figures and numbers seem to be just a myth given the condition that our women already are in right now. However, we must not forget that it's not just “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” but “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao aur phir Beti kaam pe bhi jaayegi aur kamayegi bhi”.
