This is the first time France has hosted the tournament, this is the 8th Women’s World Cup which is going to take place over 52 matches in nine cities across the country—from Parcdes Princes in the capital to the Allianz Riviera stadium in Nice.
This 8th FIFA Women’s World Cup was billed as the most competitive edition of the tournament in the history, begins in Paris on June 7th, where the first match is between France and South Korea at a sold-out Parcdes Princes in Paris. There are 552 players who are representing twenty-four countries at the World Cup in France. In which some are household names, many aren't. England and Scotland are among the 24 teams taking part and will face each other in their first match in Group D in Nice on Sunday, June 9th. England is one of the strongest team in the world cup which is packed with class players like Lucy Bronze, Fran Kirby, Toni Duggan and Steph Houghton. America is the defending champions, the team will open their World Cup campaign next Wednesday in a bid to take home their fourth title. The four teams making their debut this year are Chile, Scotland, South Africa and Jamaica- the first ever Caribbean team to qualify. So, the sport (football) is finally breaking into the mainstream. The Baird Television Development Company(BBC) has committed to broadcast every game and recent warm-up matches. Till now a total of 950,000 tickets are sold to this point for the month-long tournament.
In the tournament, the top two teams in each of the six qualifying groups will advance to join the knockout stages, where they will be joined by the four best third-placed teams.
This year the prize money for the tournament is $30 million. FIFA has doubled the prize money since the 2015 World Cup in Canada. Whereas, the prize money of Men's World Cup 2018 was $400million, but $30 million still remains the fraction of $400 million.
People are globally accepting the change in sports where they are ready to see girls playing on the ground same as men. In football, the three times champions, United States could be the favorites to retain their world cup title but the rapid growth of this game globally means they will face tough competition on the field against the countries like Germany, Japan and Norway. On the other hand, the hosts (France), Netherlands, European Champions, and Australia believe that they can upset the current world champions. This is what FIFA 2018 World Cup is all about.
