Are women really empowered? Indeed, they are. From a small household, to a company; from a village to a country. Since the very ancient times women have been empowered; the most ancient texts, the Vedas assert feminine to be the supreme principle behind all of cosmos. This idea was further elaborated in legendary epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana which revolve around the central character, who happens to be a woman. “A woman is a complete circle in herself, she has the power to create, nurture and transfer,” words of an eminent personality. A boy enters this magnanimous world through a woman, is brought up by an incredible woman, is supported by a woman and above all is loved unconditionally by a woman. It is a shameful statement to make that women need to be empowered, because they already are; it is the environment that needs to change, the mindset that needs to change, the vision that needs to change. In a household, the woman manages everything, fosters the family and maintains order in a house; this inculcates managerial abilities and leadership qualities in women. These qualities become plus points and woman like Theresa May and Angela Merkel go on to become competent world leaders. There is no profession, at present, that woman are not excelling in; take astronomy, women like Sunita Williams and Valentina Tereshkova; take business, Indira Nooyi and Kiran Mazumdar are two of the many extremely successful business women and so on and so forth. The question that should bug our minds is, “Are women safe?” The right that we should fight for is Right to Safety. Safety, not only in physical terms but also mental and emotional terms. Women should be safe to project their emotions in the society without the fear of being judged. Are women safe enough to think out of the box? Safe enough to confront? Safe enough to raise their voice? NO. The need of the hour is to make the world safe for women and not empower women. The administration of all States must give women an environment to be able to think without hinderance, to be able to think without judgment. Women need an atmosphere to feel safe, to be safe. The mindset of people needs to change, their value systems have to be strengthened, their grassroot education has to be substantiated. The government needs to reinforce the laws for women safety, the legislature needs to put forth more women dominated laws granting higher safety standards to women and last but not the least the judiciary has to fortify women. In the words of Aristotle, woman is an inferior man; but no, woman is a superior man. Women need to be granted their stature back, it is imperative that they get their freedoms and rights back, they must stand up against patriarchy for history reveals that women have always been more powerful than men. It is time to fight for our freedom to be safe; physically, fight rape; mentally, fight barriers; emotionally, fight obstructions.
