(Ripe coffee beans)
Initially, coffee is grown in three regions of India : Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. But its quite exciting to know that coffee plantation is spreading its paths and states like Andhra Pradesh and Orissa along with the Eastern side, 'seven sisters states of India' sow it too!
Two well known coffee grown are the Arabica and Robusta.
Where the first coffee was introduced?
It was during the 17th century when coffee was first introduced in the BABA BUDAN GIRI hill ranges of Karnataka and since then was marketed over the years under brand name of KENT.
THE STORY BEHIND
A Saint named BABA BUDAN while retuning from a pilgrimage to Mecca, however managed to smuggle seven of coffee beans from Yemen to Mysore in India. Given the strict export regulations of Mecca that allowed no one to carry coffee beans in raw form but roasted to prevent germination in other countries, it is status attached with the Saint name for 'considerable achievement'.
Soon cultivation of coffee beans followed in 1670, and where it was sown was named 'Baba Budan Giri Hills' of Karnataka. What's next?British came and flourished coffee export to their home.
It is known that South Indian consumption on coffee is relatively more than North Indian counterpart. With 'The Indian Coffee House' chain first started in early 1940s during British rule, gradually the chain was extended and now we see its branches in Pondicherry, Lucknow, Nagpur, Mumbai, Kolkata, basically every corner of the country, yes? And how can we forget one of those popular chains : Cafe Coffee Day, Barista, Expresso Coffee and on and on.
