Greater issues often suppress the relatively smaller ones. Here is one such neglected issue in our society- THE FAMILY CRISIS. The name does sound a bit exaggerated but the problem regarding it is not. The issue is the tearing apart of the joint families to nuclear families. Urbanisation is one of the key reasons for their disintegration. People tend to separate from their joint establishments to nuclear ones. But nothing comes without pros and cons. The practicality of the existence of joint structures is questionable in today’s world. Industrialization has a major role to play because people have to move away from their roots to improve their way of living by getting a better job or by studying in better colleges etc. Women empowerment can also be seen as a factor, as their right to property inheritance which was introduceda few years back has led them to live freely and on their own. These are ways by which people have broken the shackles of joint families to be on their own.Legislations such as Hindu Marriage Act, 1955,Hindu Succession Act, 1956,Dowry Restraint Act, 1961 have supported the formation of nuclear families. Special Marriage Act, 1954 has permitted the freedom of selection of partners and marriage in any religion or caste without the consent of their guardians. This has affected the marriage system to a large extent. Therefore people feel differently about the concept of marriage. People disagreeing about the concept of nuclear families may argue that the impact of western culture does have something to do with Indian families breaking up.But all the other factors outweigh it. But if we look at some of the existing joint families, they are not like the old ones with strict rules and all. They are simple modern families who live together but even they are breaking up.The reason is not the same ,it is totally different.People are now so used to modernization that even happy joint families become boring for them. They tend to move out and start their own small family. The question is the disintegration of families in 90’s were due to some actual problems faced by them, they did because they had to ,but nowadays people move out because they want to.They do it because they face the deficiency of their own space. Now that might not seem that much of a problem but it is one hell of a problem which is the root cause of every household quarrel or clashes we hear. That is something people need to work on,sort it out themselves but however small it might seem it is actually more than just a household quarrel.Joint families might have numerous disadvantages, but the love and bonding shared by the people living inside is incomparable to what we share.
