Everyone in this world loves to sleep. There is not a single person who doesn’t like to sleep which stabilizes mental health. The deprivation of sleep causes various health problems. Sleep deprivation has become a common problem from middle age for almost all individuals.

A sleeping pill may be effective at ending the sleep deprivation for a short term effectively. The problem comes inside the circle when we take the medicine for long term without the prescription of doctor. People tend to ignore or doesn’t know about the side effects of these sedatives. When one truly acknowledges the side effects, they can avoid misusing these sedatives.

Most sleeping pills come under the category “sedative hypnotics” which is a specific class of drugs used to induce or maintain sleep. This category includes benzodiazepines, barbiturates and other hypnotics.

Benzodiazepines are anti-anxiety medications which increase drowsiness and help people sleep. All of them are highly addictive and can cause problems with memory and attention. So, they are not recommended for long term treatment of sleeping problems.

Barbiturates, another class of “sedative hypnotics” category, depress the central nervous system and can cause sedation. Generally, these drugs are limited to use in anesthesia. This shows that it can be fatal in overdose.

Some newer types of medications reduce the time it takes to fall asleep. These are less likely to be habit-forming, but can cause physical dependence over time.

You would be heartbroken to know that sleeping pills can interfere with normal breathing patterns and can turn out to be dangerous for people having chronic lung problems such as asthma and emphysema.

General side effects of sleeping pills include;
Burning or tingling in the limbs, changes in appetite, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, facial swelling etc. to name a few.

Some sleeping pills have harmful side effects including parasomnias. These are movements, behaviors and actions over which you have no control, like sleep walking. These complex sleep behaviors are more likely to occur if you increase the dosage of a sleeping pill.

Can you be allergic to sleeping pills?
People who have an allergic reaction to a specific sleeping pill should avoid it. It's important to talk to your doctor at the first sign of these allergic reactions, including blurred vision, chest pain, difficulty breathing or swallowing, itching, nausea, rash, vomiting etc. to name a few.

Can you become dependent on sleeping pills?
After regular use for a longer period, some sleeping pills such as benzodiazepines may stop working as you build a tolerance to the medication.

Without the sleeping pill, you might find it difficult to sleep. If that happens, it could be a sign of a physical or emotional dependence or both. Some studies show that long-term use of sleeping pills actually interferes with sleep. The best way to avoid developing a physical or emotional dependence on sleeping pills is to follow your doctor's instructions.

Have a nice sleep without pills to stay healthy!
