History and Language

Santorini is believed to be inhabited since 3000 BC during the period of Minoan Civilization. The island used to be initially called “Stongili”. The island was also a victim to a major volcanic eruption in 1500BC, which is believed to have led to the death of Minoan civilization. Despite the earthquake in 1956, that caused large abandonment of the island, santorini sped up their pace of recovery and proudly stands as one of the most famous picked tourist destination around the world since the 1970s.

The language spoken in santorini is Greek but with a few difference in comparison to the mainland Greek language. However due to housing large number of tourists over the years, the citizens are well versed in English and many other European languages.
