Laurel was industrious,

She put in all she had.

But Yanny got the job,

As the boss was her dad!

How many times have we witnessed people getting their jobs done by simply having one useful contact number or one dear distant relative in a position of authority? You might lose count, but all of us have benefited from our contacts at some point in time.

In a country having a population of more than 135 crores, if you need a service to be provided or your demands to be answered promptly, using your 'network' is inevitable.

A young man late for work is stopped by a traffic policeman for violating the red signal and is liable to pay a heavy fine and lose his license. He immediately dials a number and the policeman is forced to release him as the inspector instructs to! Irrespective of the fact that this was incorrect or that the inspector was his father's class1 bench-mate whom the man had never even seen; the contact saved the day!

Using Contacts For Education:

The education system in India has several flaws and loopholes. Though institutions have been attempting to highlight the gravity of pure merit, the rules can be twisted by some.

A concerned father contacting the dean or principle (whom he is acquainted with via several links); for his child's admission is a common scenario.

Using Contacts For Career Advancement:

Your network can play a significant role in helping you to either secure a job or sponsor your business. The trouble is again caused by the massive population.

However talented and diligent you might be, if your skills are not acknowledged they are not worth having. It is here that you require someone who knows you to either recognize your capabilities or get them accredited by a relevant authority.

Dealing With Government Services:

Whether it is standing in a queue at the post office or waiting for your document to be approved, the strong contacts will help you accomplish the task; quickly!

The How To..

'Talking' is an indispensable craft that expands your network.

Acknowledging all the people you come across, exchanging favors and maintaining an affirmative relation will be efficacious in the long run. You never know who might come to your aid in the time of adversity!

Practically, it is in no way wrong to benefit from the people you know. It is just a point you scored over all those who did not have the 'links'. These 'links' work wonders; as wondrous as the brotherhood of Sherlock and Mycroft worked for both.

But virtue lies in knowing how much you deserve and asking for favors accordingly. If not, karma always awaits!!
