A state of disarray erupted due to an assault at (NRS)Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital after a 75-year-old patient, Mohammad Sayeed died in the medicine ward due to cardiac arrest. His family members were upset due to his death, and alleged the hopital for its medical negligence. The clashes between the doctors turned violent due to which a junior doctor at the hospital, Paribaha Mukhopadhyay suffered heavy damages to his skull because of getting hit by the stones.

Paribaha Mukhopadhayay

The situation was brought under control only after the intervention of police. They tried to pacify the situation.

NRS Hospital shut down

Numerous junior doctors of NRS have now gone on strike, demanding better security for doctors and intervention of Mamata Banerjee, CM of West Bengal. Protests are being continued in front of the gates of the medical institute. Now, the senior doctors have also joined the strike and there is complete shutdown of AIMS in support of the doctors at West Bengal. The CM of West Bengal stated " Cops die on duty, why doctors can't" which is a completely wrong statement. It is the duty of cops to fight but doctors have to sav elife, they are not on duty against goons.

There are various cases of violence against doctors, no state is left where you cannot see the brutality on doctors. We need to understand that doctors are not GOD, they cannot cure the diseases completely through magic, they can just give prescriptions. They can guarantee the best treatments but not 100%results.

Those who attack doctors and create violence inside hopitals disrupt the harmony of the country.

India being the world's largest sovereign, secular and democratic republic provides human rights to every citizen of the country. These rights are against all types of violence and those who create a state of barbarity against doctors violate their human rights.

Some of the rights that are violated in this case are mentioned below:

  • Article 19 (1)(g) of the Indian Constitution states that - All the citizens of India have the right to carry on any trade, business or profession, which in this case creates hinderance for medical profession.

  • Article 21 of the Indian Constitution- right to life where every citizen has a right to live which in this case is threatened due to the acts of these people.

The government needs to take serious steps for the security of doctors and make amendments under the Doctors Protection Act, 2010 and give justice to every doctor who is assaulted. If we want to end violence against doctors we need to chnage the attitude of patient community.
