It's said the day you climb the professional ladder is also the day your personal life would be in smoke. The role of every individual only multiplies with the course of life. It's further loaded with expectations, responsibilities, endless targets and so on and so forth. The question that arises is, can one achieve success in all spheres of life? How shall they do justice in fulfilling every role?
This brings me to the marvellous novel 'Scent of the Soil' by Suchita Malik. The story revolves around a man named Shubhojit who is an honest civil servant with two Prime Minister's awards and is at the peak of his career. His dedication to his work ,positions him at the crossroad of professional and private life.He grapples with the feelings of dissatisfaction, frustration and abject loss of enthusiasm.A stage that strucks most people in their mid life.Shubhojit realized how his wife Yashodhara had raised their kids single handedly .His son and daughter had indulged into all kinds of addictive habits from smoking to drugs. Moreover the fact that he had hardly visited his ageing mother back in the village caused him a physical and mental breakdown. He decided to take a recourse by resigning at 55 and going back to his roots. He felt as if he had lost control of his relations and was too distant from amendments.Life consists of various phases and our actions cannot always be aligned with our actions.Just like there are various seasons, human life has its own autumn an spring. The various roles that a person occupies in their life may be overpowering and in turn undermine other roles. This can be a indeliberate result the consequences of which are often unexpected. This brings us to the entire discourse on how to live a more fulfilling life?Professional complacency is generally disregarded as it stunts growth but it may become inevitable for a health married and parental life. After all priorities can change with phases.
So where was it that Shubhojit lacked exactly?Well,he failed to maintain a balance in his life. The absolute focus on one aspect that was his career made him oblivious of his roles as a father, son and husband. Various phases of life demands different set of priorities.Mid life stability is a skill that is achieved through management. Ignorance is an indeliberate mistake that a person makes once they enter the vicious cycle of life.Hence it's important to be conscious of every colour of our life so that the end is a painting.
