Since class 1 we are writing essays, earlier on topics like 'Seasons', slowly making it tougher and tougher and now we can write on almost any given topic. But we all would agree that writing essays has never been an easy task. It requires a lot of thinking and research. Only then you can write something worth reading.

There are certain points discussed below, which should be kept in mind when writing. These points will help you making your pen smoother and faster and will make your essays an affective read.

Select a topic

If the topic is given to you(else choose a topic of your interest) then choose a title for your essay. Give a title that must flash a glimpse to your essay. Choose a very specific and short title which should provide an overview to your readers. For eg, give your write-up a title 'India' if you're talking about India in general but be more specific, say if you are talking about Indian institute of technology or anything else. Title is a heart of one's essay which must be given wisely.

Define the purpose of your essay

It is also very important to know what the purpose of your essay is? Whether you want to persuade or argue, or you want to describe or analyse something. Language changes according to the purpose and so is the form of one's essay. If you want to persuade your readers through your writing, then you should be using strong words and phrases which would hit them hard enough to ponder over your point. Writing an argumentative essay is rather tougher. One need to research well on the topic and should give logical and sensible arguments to support his/her claim.

Descriptive essays are quite easy to write. Writing these kinds of things just need a linguistically smart brain who knows the worth of each word and know how to catch his/her reader's attention. Which word to be used where and which word to be used when! People who are word smart are good at writing Stories(description).

Organize your ideas

Organisation of ideas is quite tougher as there are thousands of thoughts in your head at a moment. Here, all you need to do is to make a small blue print of these ideas on a paper. Take the help of diagrams and outlines. Put your unorganised thoughts on a rough paper, and see which information should be mentioned first, where to give this argument and what is next after this line!

Organisation is as important as giving a title because your ideas needs coherence too and without coherence your essay would be like a body who have a broken backbone.

Write Introduction

Introduce your topic in the very first paragraph. What does your title means? Why are you writing this? What's the motive behind it and other basic questions which immediately arises in a reader's mind once s/he reads the title.

Writing introduction demands a lot of thinking about what to write first and what to mention next. Give definition if it's a descriptive essay, for instance, or starts with a quotation if it's purpose is to persuade. Your introduction should be interesting enough to get your readers glued to your article.

Body

Then comes the body of your article. The body is a description of a diagram you've made earlier. It contains all the descriptions and the arguments which you have had recorded and researced earlier.

The body could be divided into different paragraphs containing different items and carrying different ideas but each paragraph should support the purpose of your essay.

Conclusion

This part of the essay mainly sums up the arguments presented in the body. The concluded paragraph should give an idea that you have done your part and have given a proper argument to support your topic. Using slightly different wordings, conclude your essay and put the end marker.

The art of essay writing is not as easy as it seems to be but it is also not as difficult as teachers calls it. It's possible to write a genuine and proper essay just by keeping these small points in mind. You too can excel in this case, all you need is PRACTICE.

Happy Writing.
