Started in 1926, the institute is steadily sailing through the millennium change and has emerged into one of the most prominent institutions of the country. Back then it wasn't an IIT or rather IIT wasn't there. The time when the country was a mere slave to the Britishers, this institute was started in the hope of a turnaround. Indian School of Mines came up a Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering. It was September 2016, when it got transformed into an IIT. Till then it has been serving the nation.

Let's get started with an overview of the campus.

A fully residential campus with 10 hostels - seven for boys and three for girls. All hostels have a mess, canteen, badminton courts, volleyball courts and common halls (having TV and table tennis tables) except girls' hostels. The newly constructed hostels of boys and girls also have gyms in their compound, which are in addition to the main gym that is for all IIT (ISM) students. The interesting thing about the hostels at IIT(ISM) is that they are named after gemstones be it Jasper, Opal, Amber, Sapphire, Emerald, Rosaline, Ruby, Topaz and Diamond.

There is two separate sports ground. Upper ground for Athletics and Football and lower ground for Cricket and Hockey. There is a separate Sports Complex for Volleyball, Basketball, Lawn Tennis and Hand Ball. An International sized swimming pool is an aid for all the swimmers out there.

The Sports Activity Centre (SAC) is a hub for all co-curricular and Indoors. It's a homage to all the clubs like LitC( Literary Club), Black Knight Club (Chess Club), Toastmasters, ADC (Dramatics Club), Manthan (Music Club), LitM & WTC (Dance Club), LCI (Videography Club), FotoFreaks (Photography Club), ArtFreaks (Art Club), Astronomy Club and NGOs like Fast Forward India and Kartavya.

An institute without a Lecture complex in no institute. IIT(ISM) has two of them. Old Lecture Hall Complex (OLHC) & New Lecture Hall Complex (NLHC). With over 50 classrooms, it is the mitochondria of the institute.

Academic Complex, the centre point of all the departments. Be it the laboratories or the Professors, this is the place where you would often visit apart from hostels and lecture halls.

The Central Library, might not be the largest in the world but is the largest library in India. With seven floors and numerous books, it is the place where you wanna head to during exams. For those who would like to grab a bite midst the books, the ground floor has a cafeteria, with several kinds of fast foods available at a nominal price.

The host of all the major events of the college, Penman Auditorium is another gem. Named after the institute’s founder-principal Dr David Penman, the spacious and air-conditioned auditorium exhibits an appealing vintage built painted in brick red colour.

The oldest and perhaps the most beautiful building of all, the Heritage Building stands out imputed to its characteristic colonial architecture, in addition to the fabulous Oval Garden before it. The building houses the oldest departments of the Institute, the departments of Applied Geology and Mining Engineering. However, its appealing design appeals to all students irrespective of departments, rendering it a quite popular spot for the campus community.

The oldest gardens of IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, the Oval Garden garden is located in front of the Heritage Building. As the name suggests, this garden is oval shaped and is open for everyone during college hours. An annual flower show is organized in February to showcase a staggering variety of beautiful flowers growing in the garden. The garden boasts of possessing all kinds of flowers present during the Mughal empire. It is famous for a 2.5 million years old fossil, named Petrified Wood, which stands at the heart of this garden. With such a rich history, this garden acts as a source of nonstop fascination.

Apart from these, there are other attractions here in the IIT(ISM) Dhanbad. Dhanbad, the coal capital of India is itself a must visit place. The best thing about Dhanbad is its varying temperature. At once it might seem a sunny day but the very next moment it can turn out to be perfect weather you would have imagined.

Isn't the campus alluring?
