Pt. [Taking care of your ear piercing]

Getting your ears pierced is something that most people decide to do at one point or another.

From little kids to full grown adults, the idea of being able to wear ear jewelry that complements your own unique style is enticing to many people.

However, ear piercing care should never be overlooked. So, after you get your ears pierced, they take at least 6 weeks to heal. For those 6 weeks, you have to be very careful about your ears, to not get any infections.

First, be sure that the earrings have a gold post which is less likely to cause swelling or infection.

You have to wash your hands thoroughly before touching the ears or the earrings.

Then, soak a cotton swab with salt water to clean the area around the hole twice a day. Some recommend using hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, or antibiotic ointment but salt water disinfects and is less damaging to the skin tissue.

The place where you have the piercing done will likely recommend an ear piercing cleaning solution, but salt water is what I would recommend (not only is it better for the skin, it’s less expensive too!).

After this, with clean hands, gently rotate the earrings in the ear at least twice a day, so that the earing dosen't get stuck.

Watch for signs of infection which include redness, itching, swelling, heat, pus, and pain. Infection can be caused by bacteria or by allergic reaction.

It's also best if you don't go swimming for the first few weeks. Keep your body hydrated. A healthy diet is always important but especially after a piercing. Also make sure to avoid additional trauma to the piercing area.

Try and not sleep on your earring, it can infect it. You may be tempted to touch your new piercings. However, this is something you should avoid.
