Different Types Of Calendars And Its Purpose In Our Day-To-Day Life

A calendar is a system where in the days are organized for social, religious, commercial or administrative purposes. It is categorized into days, weeks, months and years. It depicts list of planned events, which are chronologically documented and synchronized with the cycle of sun or moon.

It originated from the Latin word calendar meaning calling or to call out.

Calendars can be categorized into three types.

1.      Lunar calendars are synchronized according to the movement of the Moon (lunar phases). In these calendars the days are numbered within each lunar phase cycle. Example is the Islamic calendar.

2.      Solar calendars are based on perceived seasonal changes synchronized to the movement of the Sun. These assign a date to each solar day, which consist of the period between sunrise and sunset. Example is the Persian calendar.

3.      Lunisolar calendars are based on a combination of both solar and lunar calculations. These calendars compensate by adding an extra month as needed to realign the months with the seasons. Examples include the traditional calendar of China, the Hindu calendar in India, and the Hebrew calendar.
