When we think about slavery in India we usually think about all old days when we were under the British Rule.
Now India is called a free nation.
Though we call India as a free country or a democratic country do you really think slavery is vanished in our country?
No not at all, slavery is not just a term of the past but it is also very prevalent today.
All kinds of slavery, including bonded labour, forced child labour, commercial sexual exploitation, forced begging, forced marriage, etc still exist very much in India
These labour are used in sectors like construction, sex, agriculture, fishing, domestic help, begging and manufacturing industries
India has the highest number of slaves in the world
114 million to 18 million of men, women and kids are slaves in India
The most affected ones are the kids and women
Not all are forced into slavery
The lack of things and poverty pushes them into slavery
Many work as slaves in brick kilns
Children are made to work in bangle making industries where they lose their eye sight and are affected with breathing problem and back problems at a very early stage
Children are refrained from education
Sometimes their own parents push them into slavery
Kids are sold in market
Girls are sold in markets for prostitution
They are not provided with proper food and water.
They are made to sleep on the ground as they belong to low cast
Girls are not provided with proper sanitary facilities and there is no rest for them even when they are ill
Kids are made to work under harsh conditions which results in their malnutrition and stunned growth
They are made to work for more than 14 hours a day
Most of the times girls are sexually abused in their work places
Though we have had immense development, these problems still exist in our society
Now in the present world we have a number of government and non government agencies working against slavery but slavery still exists in some or the other form
