We know that stories really reflect lives. But can you believe that even simple poems can also reflect the circumstances and connect to lives? Yes! I think everyone had heard about poem “The Bangle Sellers”.This poem justifies the above statement which reflects the circumstances of women in past and connects their lives.

The Bangle Sellers written by the great poetess Sarojini Naidu. It symbolizesthe Celebration of womanhood. I remember my English teacher- Mythreyi Mam who shared about this poem to us on account of Women’s day when I was in 7th standard. I still remember those words told by our mam… Let’s have a quick look over it’s summary and how it connects to lives of women.

Though the title of the poem is regarding bangle sellers, about them it is only a little bit mentioned in first stanza itself. While all other stanzas describe the stages of lives of women which are wonderfully described by the color of bangles sold.

The second stanza describes about our age ones…i.e., women in adolescence. Belonging to this age we can understand how trends and styles matter to us. So the same was the opinion of the poetess. She depicted this stage by saying that women of this age buy bangles of silver and blue tinged with flower designs. She depicts the inner feelings of the adolescence girl- carrying in her heart countless dreams of her future life.

Well, the next stage would be of a woman at the age of marriage. She described this stage by referring to the rich yellow-red color. This depicts the major stage of a woman’s life when she becomes a bride. Here, red color relates the flame of her marriage fire and boundless happiness of a bride on her wedding. The slight yellowish texture depicts the inner sadness of bride to go far away from her parents.

The last stanza discusses a woman who is a wife to a man or maybe even mother to her children. She referred their choice of bangle colors of purple and gold grey. These strong and rich colors depict the strength of a woman at this stage to manage the whole family.

Did you notice one thing; all the colors of the bangles referred correspond to rainbow colors. After a heavy rain rainbow appears in the sky and makes everyone feel happy. In the same way, a woman in a house spread a lot of happiness. Once think of those days when your mother or sister was not there at home. Everyone might have experienced great silence spread all over in the home. So such a great value woman has.

Well, the poetess depicted the stages of the woman based on the circumstances during that period. In my view as per the circumstances of now few changes must be made in the last stanza. Now a woman is not only balancing her family but even following her dreams and career.Even after marriage, she not only plays the roles of wife, mother but even balances to play her responsibility as a daughter. For example consider a family with six daughters a whole, though the family will be stable even after all those six get married.Because the attachment and love daughters have toward their parents is far more than that by sons. This is not easily understood by many.Well, today the increase in old age homes proves this.

The gradual positive changes in Indian society has been proved to be beneficial for women status. Positive thinking of people has taken a swift speed which has changed the human mind politically, economically and socially towards women.

Behind every successful man, there is a woman.Whereas behind every successful woman is Herself. A strong woman looks a challenge dead in the eye and gives it a wink.
