Reservation in India constitute series of measures such as reserving access to seats in government bodies, educational institutions and various legislatures. The reservation has been provided to historically backward classes, who faced a lot of inequalities, discrimination and other oppressive behavior of majorities. It is intended to make them assure of equality enshrined in the constitution.

The Constitution has prohibited the concept of untouchability and has special provisions for the betterment of these classes i.e. SC, ST and OBC.Thus, the primary objective of reservation is to enhance the social, economical and educational status of the unprivileged sections of the society.

In modern India there’s a need to revise these laws for reservations. So the cabinet has taken the most imperative decision of the era to provide reservation on the grounds of monetary terms. Union Cabinet has declared 10% reservation for economically backward class belonging to general category.

Facts of announcement:
This amendment was announced on 7th January 2018 by Cabinet Union, which is chaired by our honorable Prime Minister i.e. Shri Narendra Damodar Das Modi. It was the most imperative decision taken by the government for the betterment of nation. It was the need of an hour. Cabinet mentions that 10% reservation will be given to Economically backward class belonging to general category. This reservation is basically enacted for higher education and jobs so that weaker sections in the general category could earn their bread and butter.

Reservation to general category in education sector has been provided alike ST, SC, OBC category in universities and colleges and other education institutions. From now on any child from any section of the society will have the opportunity to study in any school he or she dreamt to!

Reservations in employment sector would give direct admissions to general category individuals. This would eradicate the sense of inferiority complex from the society based on monetary terms.

General category belt includes Brahmans, Baniyas, Rajputs, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Jainiesand others because financial crisis doesn’t discriminate!

Presently reservation quota clearly favors SC ST and OBC .i.e.
1.Scheduled Tribes :- 15
2.Scheduled Caste :- 7.5
3.Other Backward Class :- 27
Total is around 49.5 %

Basically this reservation was provided to them after independence, proposed by Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar because it was necessary to uplift these people who have always been in a minority section and were always deprived off the opportunities. So to assure them their security and to protect their rights this reservation system was introduced. It was clearly mentioned in the constitution that this would prevail only for 10 years but later political parties like Congress and others just to fulfill their personal interest they kept on promoting it.

Criteria for economically backward people:-
A person in India is considered financially weaker if:
1.Total annual income is below 8 lakh
2.Their own house or property size is smaller 1000sq. ft.
3.Agriculture land owned by them if less than 5 hectares(acre)
4.Residential plots owned by them are below 1090 yards in notified municipality.
5.Their own residential plot below 209 yards in non
notified municipality area.

The reservation will be over and above the existing 50% reservation given to SC, ST , and OBC. Additional 10% will add in existing 50% .i.e. total reservation reach at the level of 60%.

SC caped a upper limit of reservation .i.e. maximum to 50%
To break the upper limit, Union Cabinet requires constitutional amendment in article 15 and 16. For this Amendment a bill will be formed which has to pass from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. And finally it will be presented in front of President of India for his final signature.

Therefore, the reservations on economical ground provides a platform where rich and poor sections can come together to fight for the betterment of nation.
