The past couple of years in the smartphone industry have been dramatic, the design has changed a lot this time, phones have been dominated by the concept of increasing the screen-to-body ratio, and working hard on where to put critical components on devices that require the screens.

We have already seen with fingerprint sensors and voice grills and minimizing the space of selfie camera.

This time oppo has introduced a very innovative concept, a company that’s done its share of anti-bezel experimentation with display notches and pop-up selfie cameras, now has introduced a brand new model having an under-screen camera to the public at MWC Shanghai this week, after a tease earlier in the month.

OPPO's brand new solution for full-screen display is the technology termed as Under-screen Camera (USC) has been unveiled at MWC19 Shanghai!

Oppo revealed in the summit that the display uses a custom transparent material that works with a redesigned pixel structure so that light can get through to the camera easily. The sensors are made larger than other selfie cameras in the market, with a wider aperture lens in front. The amazing part is the area of the screen reserved for the camera easily works with touch control.

front camera is open still the camera behind screen is not visible

Oppo says display quality won’t be affected with the camera at the back,

Oppo does accept the fact that putting a screen in front of a camera will naturally reduce photo image quality, with problems like haze, glare, and color cast needing to be overcome.

The company says it’s developed algorithms that will work with the hardware and will fix the quality when stored in the gallery and claims the quality is “on par with mainstream devices,”

Oppo says its objective to launch an under-screen camera device “is in the near future.” The company often shows off core technology at trade shows in prototype form before shipping it on a commercial product — the current Reno flagship phone with its periscope zoom lens is a good example so there’s a reason to believe such a phone will be coming soon.
