Met Gala, an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute is a star-studded event that takes place at the New YorkCity. This year’s Met Gala theme was “Camp: Notes on Fashion”. You are supposed to cross all the boundaries of fashion but does it permit you to cross the boundaries of humanity.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was seen wearing a blush pink Oscar de la Renta gown that featured over 20,000 ostrich feathers. Cardi B Brought the Red Carpet to the Met Gala by wearing a gem-encrusted gown. The hand-embroidered dress was also decorated with 30,000 burned and dyed coque feathers. Kendall Jenner, Kylie Jenner, and Naomi Campbell also wore a lot of feathers. Those feathers once belonged to living, feeling animals and were ripped out of their bodies, which were left bloody, broken, and destroyed. Well, there are other ways to exhibit you as a big bird as Billy Porter did.
A large number of animals are illegally trafficked every year. Pangolins are among the world’s most illegally trafficked animal. The trade is huge as there are large numbers of alternatives for Pangolin scales in traditional Chinese medicine. In March 2018, Sudan, the last remaining male northern white rhino, died at the age of 45. The population's decline wascaused by extensive poaching for their horns. In the USA, only 40 endangered red wolves remain in the wild, and the population could go extinct within eight years. Vaquita's (adolphin-like porpoise) which arethe world's rarest marine mammalin the world, there are currently less than 30 of them remaining.
Species that got extinct in last few years are Cryptic Treehunter, Alagoas Foliage-gleaner, Po'ouli, Spix's Macaw and Eastern Puma. Scientists estimate we're now losing species at 1,000 to 10,000 times the background rate.
A threat to biodiversity is a threat to the environment which is further a threat to human beings. Forests are being constantly cut down to soothe the hunger of the industrialists. Water resources are vanishing. Glaciers are melting at an alarming rate and above all this year, the temperature on earth in the summer has broken all records. It is never too late to start. There is a growing wave of extinctions sweeping across the continents and this is high time. We, the humans are challenging our own existence by threatening the biodiversity. We need to watch our deeds before they wipe us.
As you sow so shall you reap.
