A good night’s sleep, which everyone tends to ignore these days is the most important requirement for your perfect health goals. You just can’t focus on your diet and exercise and ignore your sleep. Unfortunately, certain elements interfere with your natural sleeping patterns, smartphones and TV being the biggest contributor.

Average sleeping time has been reduced over the decade and sleep quality has been on the decline as well. Here are 5 reasons why you must sleep well.

1. POOR SLEEP CAN INCREASE YOUR WEIGHT.

People with short sleep duration are more in weight than those who get adequate amount of sleep. Short sleep duration is the biggest factor for obesity. When you don’t get a good amount of sleep, Gherlin, a hormone released in stomach which signals hunger in the brain, is released in high quantity making you consume more calories. These calories contain more fat and carbohydrates than protein and vitamins because the former two help you gain more energy which you were not able to do so while sleeping.

2. INCREASED CONCENTRATION AND PRODUCTIVITY

When you are deprived of proper sleep, your brain might not function properly. Your decision making skills become low and you are not able to think clearly. Adequate sleep helps in recharging your brain, making it more efficient and effective, which increases your problem-solving skills and enhance memory.

3. RISK OF HEART DISEASES INCREASES

Sleep is essential for a healthy heart. People who don’t sleep enough are at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Sleeping less than 7-8 hours in a day is linked to higher risk of heart disease and stroke.

4. DEPRESSION

Poor sleep quality are a major reason for mental health issues like depression. Around 90% depressed people state that they don’t get enough sleep or the quality of their sleep is not great. People having sleep disorders like insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea have higher rates of depression. If you really want to tackle your depression, then try changing your sleeping patterns and make sure that the amount of sleep you are getting should be of good quality.

5. AFFECTS EMOTIONS AND SOCIAL LIFE

Sleep deprived people, especially those who have a long history of bad sleep patterns tend to be more frustrated and tense socially. Improper sleep results in lack of motivation to interact with people, decrease in ability to focus on what the other person is saying. Sleep deprived people are found to lonely and less desirable by well rested people.

There are many more effects of sleep on your health and the list is long but always keep in mind that you can’t attain perfect health just by focusing on your diet and exercise. A good night sleep is as important as the former two.
