Eco-sensitive zone-Western Ghats of India

Eco-sensitive zones are the area in which the natural heritage is protected with law. There are different committees in India which are working under the guidance of government of India to ensure the natural habitatsto remain protected. the whole range of sahyadri-range is declared as a eco-sensitive area under which the mining & coal industries are banned by the central government of India.this area should be protected due to the large number of bio-diversity is present in this area which actually protected. The western Ghats are spread in the different states Karnataka, Maharashtra , Kerala, Goa and Gujarat.

Western Ghats are environmental backbone to the different states of the India, they are main attraction of tourism and it provides the economy to the local people who are depend on this area for their daily needs. if we see the range of western Ghats they are starting from Gujrat and ends at Kerala. this is very wide range of the Ghats where different species lives.so it’s the first initiative by government of India to maintain its ecology and implement strong rule ofNational Green Tribunal the government’s authority which ensure the safety of such kind of area.around 90 % of the nearly 57,000sq.km. ESA mentioned in the fourth and final notification is already protected. Now demand is to protect the entire Western Ghats by notifying the mountain ranges as ESA.it proposes a ban on new 'red' category industries as specified by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) or State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) and expansion of existing ones. Industries coming under the orange and white categories, as specified by the CPCB or SPCB, shall be allowed with strict compliance of environmental regulations. However, efforts should be made to promote industries with low environmental impacts.the ban on commercial activities such as mining and construction in the ESA would help protect the ecosystem.

Committee recommends that implementation of the recommendations of the Kasturirangan report is only possible with the active support of the local population. Insensitivity towards the ecology of the Western Ghats has made the Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka vulnerable to floods and landslides. Recent floods in Kerala & Karnataka must serve as an alarm for the governments in the States of Goa, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Western Ghats has an exceptionally high level of biological diversity and is recognized as one of the world’s eight “hottest hotspots”.so we have to protect the environmental ecology of Western Ghats.
