Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 (also referred to as Flight MH370 or MAS370 - Boeing 777 type) went missing on its way from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Beijing on March 8, 2014 with 227 passengers and 12 crew on board, remains one of the world's greatest aviation mystery. There are many questions which arises is that, what could had happened with the plane, the passengers and why this plane has never been found till now? Was this misfortune a coincidence or a conspiracy?

The story begins when the plane lost its communication with Malaysian Air Traffic Control(ATC) around 38-40 minutes after takeoff, when the flight was over the South China Sea. (Any plane is declared as missing when the transponder and other communication system attached to a plane stops transmitting its signal to ATC). After some hours, a rescue team was sent in search of MH370 at its last known location. Searching operation continued for days but nothing was found. No one knows what would had happened with this plane? After some days, it was found that, the plane last transmitted to military radars. According to which, the flight deviated westwards from its planned flight path, crossing the Malay Peninsula and Andaman Sea. It left radar range 370 km northwest of Penang Island in northwestern Malaysia. Now it was clear that, why the rescue team was unable to find the plane debris.

All were guessing it to be a hijack plan, resulting forceful turning of flight and shutting down the communication system. For confirmation, background of every passengers and crew members were checked, but none were found to be suspicious.

Initially search operation was focused on the South China and Andaman seas, before receiving analysis of the aircraft’s automated communications with an Inmarsat satellite identified that the aircraft turned south after passing north of Sumatra and continued its journey for six hours with little deviation in its track, ending when its fuel was exhausted with possible crash, somewhere in the Southern Indian Ocean. Several pieces of marine debris confirmed to be its part. The Joint Agency Coordination Centre heading the operation suspended the operation in January 2017, after failing to locate the aircraft in three-years search, across 120,000 square kilometres of ocean. In January 2018, a second search operation was launched by the private contractor Ocean Infinity also ended without success after six months.

Many unofficial theories have also been proposed by the media like: Remote cyber hijacking, The ‘Asian’ Bermuda Triangle, Cracks in the plane or because carrying 4566 kg of mangosteens and 221 kg of lithium-ion batteries which results in the plane to crash, Alien abduction, etc.

The disappearance of Flight 370 has been considered as one of the greatest aviation mysteries of all time. The Malaysian Ministry of Transport’s closed the case while submitting final 1100 page report in July 2018 leaving the case unsolved.
