Cities accomodate around 31% of Indian population and according to census 2011, contribute 63% of the country's GDP. It is estimated that cities will accomodate 40% population and would contribute 70% to the GDP.

The Smart Cities Mission is a proposal proposed by the current Indian Government to give a rise to the economic growth of the country and to provide better quality of life to people with the help of technology.

WHAT IS A SMART CITY?

A smart city focuses on providing the good quality of life to its people by creating greater oppotunities.

In this mission, the main objective is to provide cities with core infrastructure, a decent quality of life, a clean and sustainable environment.

HOW MANY SMART CITIES IN EACH STATE OR UT?

The total number of proposed smart cities is 100 and they are distributed in an equal proportion over the states and UTs. The mission gives equal weightage to urban population and population of number of towns of the state/UT.

FINANCING THE SMART CITIES

This mission will be operated as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CES) and the financial support by the Central Government is upto ₹48000 cr over 5 years giving on an average ₹100 cr per year per city.

CHALLANGES TO ' SMART - CITIES ' MISSION

1) Ministry Of Urban Development is using a method to select cities for funding and adopt an approach of area - based development for the first time.

2) The States and The ULBs ( Urban Local Bodies ) will play a key role in the advancement and evolution of smart cities

3) Success of the mission will based upon smart leadership, smart vision and smart act.

4) This mission requires people to act smartely and also participate in the governance and strategies. Involvement of smart people will lead to smart work resulting in smart cities .

5) The smart cities challenge is a competition introduced to inspire and support municipal officials as they make smart proposals to improve the standard of living.
