Alcoholism- A Disease

Alcoholism is precisely defined as addiction to alcohol. A person suffering from alcoholism shows various common symptoms like lack of mental and physical self control when drinking ( which is not just occasionally) , frequent craving for alcohol,high capacity of intake of alcohol. The effects of this disease are serious and life threatening. Alcoholics usually have a very disturbed family and personal life which sometimes leads to undesirable circumstances thus resulting in losing near ones.

Alcohol is consumed on happy occasions as a token of joy or as a part of celebration. It is also consumed by various people in several situation to eradicate loneliness or reduce mental stress. At some moments it is also considered as an appetizer before dinner. All classes of society are into alcoholism. Wether rich or poor, employed alcohol is consumed by rich for a status symbol and poor consumes to provide mental "peace" or "contentment". Although it is difficult to ascertain the particular causes of alcoholism, but in most cases the habit of drinking develops from consuming alcohol on a daily basis. Exposure to an atmosphere of drinking or having the liberty to drink is another cause of falling prey to this deadly disease.

As per many psychologist, sometimes alcoholism is a hereditary disease. Studies showed that the people are genetically prone yo be addicts of some sort and the most common form is alcoholism. Other researchers point to cultural influences. This implies that, in a country like India having number of communities owning various cultural differences, there are various communities which are liberal, where drinking alcohol is not considered as a stigma. People also get influenced through advertising and even films where scenes showing alcohol is being consumed is shown. Though now every film begins with a statutory warning for not consuming alcohol. I don't think any people who is badly influenced by alcoholism will ever take warnings like this.

Alcoholism is like an evil that eats up the body from inside. Alcoholism causes cancer in stomach and since alcohol is not filtered by kidneys, it also affects out excretion system including liver. Alcoholism also causes severe damage to neurons which causes alterations in body movements. Once a person is into alcoholism, they can spend huge amount behind buying alcohol to quench the addiction.

The effects of alcoholism are devastating. It results into depression and alters functioning of our brain. Alcoholism is a disease to mankind and people should stand against such a life threatening disease.
