A gemstone is a piece of mineral crystal which, in cut and polished form, is used to make jewellery or other adornments. Most of these stones are formed in the Earth's crust around 3-25 miles beneath the surface. The molten magma which explodes as lava then cools down. It cools more slowly, crystallizes, and forms coarse-grained minerals and forms igneous rocks. Gemstones found in igneous rock include the quartzes (including amethyst, citrine and ametrine), the garnets, moonstone, apatite, diamond, spinel, tanzanite.

Sedimentary rock is the second type and gives rise to the transported minerals such as jasper, malachite, opal and zircon. Metamorphic rock is the third variety, is formed when intense underground heat or pressure changes existing rocks. The beryls (emerald, morganite and aquamarine), jade, lapis lazuli, turquoise, spinel, ruby, sapphire and zircon are formed in metamorphic rock.
